Bike tours and New Zealand — an Australian-first note

If you arrived here looking for a New Zealand bicycle itinerary, the honest sentence is this: you are on an Australian site, and we will not write you an Otago stage guide. New Zealand has its own official cycle-trail system, its own trail managers, and its own tourism bodies. Those pages are the ones to use for Aotearoa. This hostname publishes sourced guides to road, rail-trail, gravel and e-bike touring in Australia. Crossing the Tasman does not turn that inventory into a two-country guidebook.

This URL is a leftover from the old motorcycle-tour site that previously advertised overseas products, including New Zealand motorcycle trips. Those products are gone. The path remains so that an old inbound link still lands on a useful page instead of a 404 or a fake comparison essay.

Why we refuse the comparison

It is tempting, after a motorcycle-era URL, to line up “their famous rail trail” against “our famous rail trail” and award adjectives. That comparison is how you get invented daily kilometre tables and a false sense that the surfaces, climates and road rules are interchangeable.

They are not. Australia rides on the left, like New Zealand, and then the similarity starts to fray. Helmet law, heat, fire, flood, distances between taps, and the mere scale of the continent are Australian planning problems. New Zealand’s official cycle trails have their own weather, their own booking cultures, and their own managers. Citing them in passing as “another country that built trails on old railways” is fair. Writing a stage-by-stage Otago itinerary on an Australian domain is scope creep dressed as helpfulness.

So we will not:

• publish Otago daily stages, town-by-town tables, or “do it in three to five days” schedules
• rank an Australian trail as better or worse than a New Zealand trail
• invent shuttle prices on either side of the Tasman
• keep motorcycle copy and swap the word “bike”

Where an Australian rider should start instead

Sealed, first multi-day. Rail Trails Australia lists the Murray to Mountains at 137 km of asphalt in Victoria’s north-east, linking Wangaratta, Bright, Beechworth and Yackandandah plus sealed pieces toward Oxley and between Rutherglen and Wahgunyah. Gravel, still a railway grade. The Great Victorian is 134 km of compacted earth and fine gravel in the RTA body text, from Tallarook toward Mansfield. The Brisbane Valley is 161 km, Australia’s longest in that inventory. The Riesling and Rattler listing is 53 km from Riverton to White Hut, with a 25 km Auburn-to-Clare south section. The Northern Rivers official FAQ gives 24 km and 29.7 km of open section in New South Wales.

Long dirt, not a park. The Munda Biddi Foundation lists 1,072 km in Western Australia. South Australia’s ORSR describes the Mawson as close to 900 km. Those are adventure-touring routes. They are not a reason to write a New Zealand comparison paragraph.

If you are choosing a first Australian tour because a New Zealand trip fell through, or because you live here, use the destinations hub and match the surface to the tyre. That is a better use of an afternoon than a side-by-side of two countries’ marketing brands.

What “New Zealand has its own system” actually means

It means you should open New Zealand’s official cycle-trail pages when you are planning a New Zealand ride. It means you should believe those managers about surface, closure and booking. It means this site will not paraphrase them into a shadow guidebook so that a heritage URL looks busy.

It also means we will not pretend Australia lacks trails of its own. Rail Trails Australia exists as a national inventory. State tourism bodies — Visit Victoria, Destination NSW, Tourism and Events Queensland, the South Australian Tourism Commission, Tourism WA, Discover Tasmania — exist as regional context. Trail managers exist as the live source. That is enough work for one domain.

Practical Australian notes that still apply if you fly either way

Pack for the surface you verified, not the surface you remember from a film. Carry water on the Australian mainland as if the next tap were a rumour. Check the Bureau of Meteorology for the town you sleep in. Check fire danger in forested states and flood in the Northern Rivers and the Brisbane Valley. Wear an approved helmet. Ride on the left. Hold a line so a driver can give you the passing space the state requires.

E-bikes are common on gentle Australian rail trails when they stay within the legal power-assisted definition. The Northern Rivers FAQ’s 250 W line is the clearest trail-level statement we cite. Confirm every other manager. Charge in town.
