FAQ

What should you read before you book a bike tour?

Short answers first, official sources second, booking pages never. If a number is not cited, it is not on this page.

By the Biking Tours editorial team · Updated · 5 min read

Read the official trail manager, the state road rules and a weather page before you pay a deposit. Then read the four independent pages on this site that do not try to sell you a van: self-guided versus guided, road rules, seasons and the field guide for the actual trail.

This FAQ is written so a sentence can stand on its own. Deeper context lives in the hubs.

Trails and destinations

What is the longest rail trail in Australia? Rail Trails Australia lists the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail at 161 km, Wulkuraka to Yarraman. Treat that as the inventory figure this site uses.

Is the Murray to Mountains sealed? Rail Trails Australia describes the Murray to Mountains as asphalt and lists 137 km, including the Bright, Beechworth/Yackandandah, Oxley and Rutherglen pieces. Confirm any new extension on the official trail channels.

How long is the Great Victorian Rail Trail? RTA’s trail listing is 134 km.

How long is the Riesling Trail? RTA’s Riesling and Rattler listing is 53 km Riverton to White Hut. The south Riesling section Auburn to Clare is 25 km.

How long are the open Northern Rivers sections? The trail FAQ: 24 km Murwillumbah–Crabbes Creek and 29.7 km Casino–Lismore.

Is the Munda Biddi a rail trail? No. The Foundation describes a 1,072 km off-road adventure cycling trail from Mundaring to Albany. It includes some rail-trail pieces but it is not a valley rail trail in the BVRT sense.

Do you cover New Zealand? This guide is Australian. The heritage URL bike-tours-new-zealand explains that, without an Otago itinerary clone.

Rules, helmets, e-bikes

Do I have to wear a helmet? Austroads states that bicycle helmets are compulsory in Australia, with a table of limited exemptions that differ by state. The Northern Territory treats adults on some paths differently from roads. South Australia records a Sikh-religion exemption. Some states describe medical or religious exemptions. The state page is the rule you ride under.

Can I ride an e-bike on a rail trail? Often, if it is a legal power-assisted bicycle. Northern Rivers states e-bicycles up to 250 W. Other managers publish their own rules. A faster throttle vehicle is not a bicycle.

Do cyclists follow road rules on the road? Yes. When you leave the formation you are in the state road rules: lights, give way, passing distances, footpath permissions. See road rules and safety.

Planning and money

Guided or self-guided? Guided buys a schedule and usually a vehicle. Self-guided buys freedom and more homework. We do not sell either and we do not invent a typical price.

How does Biking Tours help? We publish sourced, independent explanations. We do not take bookings, process payments or hire bikes.

Is this the mountain-bike site? No. Road, rail-trail, gravel and e-bike touring only.

How do I send a correction? Contact the editors. We check it against a primary source before the page moves.

What belongs on this FAQ hub

Direct answers to the questions people actually type — trail lengths, helmets, e-bikes, guided versus self-guided, and who publishes the site — with a source next to every number. If you need the long version, the hubs exist.

Seasons, packing and “best time”

When should I ride? There is no single best month. Use the seasons guide and the Bureau of Meteorology town pages. The Munda Biddi Trail Foundation itself describes a late-March-to-November window in the south-west. Victorian rail trails frost in winter cuttings and cook on north-facing gravel in a heatwave. South East Queensland summers are humid. Inland South Australia on the Mawson is a water-and-heat problem before it is a scenery problem.

What should I pack? A bike that matches the official surface, an approved helmet, lights if there is a tunnel or a late finish, water, a puncture kit, and clothes for the forecast. The gear hub and packing guide are the lists. We do not publish a sponsored “kit of the year”.

Do I need to camp? Not on a typical rail-trail town-to-town ride. The official listings name settlements. Remote dirt on the Mawson is different — ORSR describes little-used country roads and park tracks. Read that page before you leave the tent at home.

How the hubs connect

How do internal guides connect? Home states the method. Tour types picks a surface. Destinations picks a state. Rail trails names the five formations we document in full, plus pointers to Munda Biddi and Mawson as off-road touring (not park riding). Planning does the arithmetic. Field guides sit underneath with official lengths and illustrated — not promised — day splits.

What belongs on the home hub? An answer-first explanation of Australian bicycle touring, sourced facts, and links into those hubs. Not a booking widget.

What belongs on each other hub? The question in the title, the official numbers, and the next link. That is the whole information architecture.

Domain history, in one breath

Why do some URLs mention motorcycles or Ladakh? This hostname previously sold overseas motorcycle tours. Those products are gone. Real post URLs still have rewritten bicycle-touring articles so inbound links do not die. Theme-demo Latin 301s once to a clean page. The about page is the publisher note; the blog is where the old magazine paths now live.

Can I republish a paragraph? Quote it, link it, and keep the source sentence attached if the paragraph contains a number. We would rather be cited accurately than scraped without the Rail Trails Australia URL.

If a short answer here disagrees with a field guide, the field guide plus its cited official page wins — and you should tell us.

Frequently asked questions

What should I read before booking anything?

Read self-guided versus guided, road rules and safety, seasons, and the official trail or parks page for the week you will ride. This site does not take bookings and does not publish live prices.

Is information kept up to date?

Each page shows an updated date. Facts are checked against the official sources listed on that page. Conditions still change faster than any editorial site — confirm with the manager before you ride.

Where can I contact the publisher?

Use the contact form. Messages go by FormSubmit to the editorial inbox. Corrections are checked against primary sources before a page changes.
